Holly Johnson, Wild Circle Farm, Yreka
Holly grew up in Fresno, CA in a farming family. She always knew that she wanted to farm and immersed herself in a world of sustainable agriculture. "The Wild Circle is my attempt at putting a language to the land. It is a love letter to the natural landscapes we call home," says Holly.
Wild Circle Farm rests on 32 acres of rangeland in the Shasta Valley.
When Holly started the farm, the land contained areas of over-tilled clay soil, rocky hardpan, and was full of invasive weeds.
The health of the soil has improved by rotating chickens in their mobile coops, reseeding native grasses, and planting cover crops.
The 1st flock was adopted in 2011. As the population grew, Holly wasn't able to give each chicken a unique name. Surprisingly, they don't mind!
Bo, the dog, isn't just a pet, he is an employee. He stays with the flock 24/7, protecting them from raptors and coyotes.
The final product: full pastured eggs, aptly named with a pun to make you smile.
