Silvia's Tamales Dunsmuir

Silvia Flores has been selling her delicious tamales at Mount Shasta Farmers' Market since the market opened in 1999.

She moved to the US from Guadalajara in 1969 and settled in Dunsmuir with her husband. Silvia's husband died 16 years ago this month but Silvia has been blessed with 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Her grandson, Carlos, helps her carry the big pots of tamales to the market on Monday, when he's not coaching highschool football.

Silvia will tell you that her family is the most important thing in her life; bringing tamales to the market is a close second.

Tamales originated in Mesoamerica, 8000 BCE and spread to Mexico, Guatemala and the rest of Latin America. They are one of the oldest and most traditional of Mexican foods. Silvia's Tamales are a delicious celebration, in every bite.
